The first NUS1000 study started as an effort to improve sleep, wellbeing, and productivity in NUS students by understanding how navigating the first semester in university influences all three. Realizing this aspiration required careful selection and testing of appropriate tracking systems, questions, and timings of evaluation. We successfully evaluated 638 freshmen over their first 20-week semester including instructional, reading, examination and vacation weeks. Sleep duration and timing were measured daily with sleep trackers (Oura Ring 3), chronotype and conscientiousness were assessed by questionnaire, and time-use was reported through a smartphone app.

The Sleep and Cognition Lab worked with leading scientists and companies around the world to develop the systems used in NUS1000, which later benefitted the structure of the protocol used in the NUS1000 Staff Edition study.
